Kamoa-Kakula’s on-site hybrid solar facility, incorporating photovoltaic (PV) generation and battery energy storage, is now fully operational, delivering 60 megawatts (MW) of continuous baseload power to the copper complex.
Completed during the third quarter of 2026, the facility comprises two 30-MW solar installations, supported by a combined 1,107-megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS). The solar facilities have a combined peak generation capacity of 433 MW, with excess energy stored in the battery system to provide a consistent 60 MW of power to operations around the clock.
Construction of the two facilities began in June 2025. The first commenced delivering power in August 2026, followed by the second in late September. The projects are owned, operated and funded by CrossBoundary Energy and Green World Energie.
Together, the installations represent the largest hybrid solar and battery storage facility at a mining operation in Africa.
Expanding renewable energy capacity
Kamoa-Kakula is advancing plans to double its on-site hybrid solar capacity to 120 MW within the next 18 months.
Two additional 30-MW facilities are planned under power purchase agreements signed with Green World Energie in April 2026 and Lualaba Solar Company in August 2026. Both facilities will be constructed within Kamoa-Kakula’s joint-venture licence area, near the Phase 1 and Phase 2 concentrators.
The expansion will further increase the contribution of renewable energy to Kamoa-Kakula’s power supply, supporting the mining complex’s long-term operational requirements.
