From Laborer to Superintendent: The Story of Ken Mukendi

Publish date: 13 May 2026

Ken Mukendi’s journey is a study in grit, adaptability, and the power of opportunity. Born in Kolwezi, Ken started his education at Mashindano School before earning his State diploma in Biology-Chemistry at Lualaba College. Early on, he set his sights on mining, enrolling first at the University of Mbuji-Mayi, then pivoting to management information systems at the Mbuji-Mayi Higher Institute of Applied Techniques, where he graduated as a computer engineer.

Ken’s first taste of mining came in Sakania at First Quantum Minerals, learning the ropes as a shaft miner. His technical expertise soon took him across borders – from Zambia’s Chingola mine to the Kipushi mine dewatering project. In 2011, Ken officially joined KICO, the company behind Kipushi’s revival, and quickly became a cornerstone of its operations.

Rising through the ranks to Superintendent, Ken credits KICO’s culture for nurturing his growth – he was promoted over seven times! He believes KICO stands out because management listens. Ken’s own ideas shaped solutions during critical operations, and he’s passionate about mentoring students and sharing what he’s learned.

Beyond mining, Ken’s interests are varied.  He’s a fan of Gospel music, an avid reader of technical books in English, and a lover of sports and construction projects. Now settled in Kipushi with his wife and five children, he sees the mine’s revival not just as a personal achievement, but as a win for the whole community.

Ken Mukendi’s story is proof that when talent meets opportunity, there’s no limit to how far you can go.
